Some places we visit by necessity; others we return to because our soul demands it. New Delhi has many such nooks where repeated visits have provided me food for soul. Many may admire its colonial architecture and Connaught Place’s upscale luxury, my affection for the city is, however, remains with its quieter corners.
New Delhi’s energy is unmatched, but sometimes you just need to breathe peacefully. My go-to escape is Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. The stillness there is a divine experience. From the pristine holy water to its magnificent, cool white marble, the gurdwara calms my mind and soul instantly. When I receive the prashad, its warmth and nutty sweetness provide a sense of spiritual fulfilment that words can rarely capture.
Exploring New Delhi’s roads means navigating a thick curtain of toxic air and an unending cacophony of traffic. Yet, the true treasure lies in the delight of the delicious food its streets provide. The tangy, spicy chhole bhature and golden, buttery, flaky parathas of old Delhi are comfort on a plate.
As the daytime’s hustle and bustle fade, the city undergoes a mesmerising transformation that fills the senses with sheer exhilaration. Nightfall carries vivid neon lights from food stalls and a cooling breeze dancing through the greenery. Ending a weekend relaxing before the majestic, glowing beauty of India Gate is the only antidote I need for the chaos of life.
